Venues

Unicon 15 is based right in the heart of Wellington, New Zealand.  All venues are within 10-15min walking distance of each other, apart from Newtown Park, which is approximately a 10min bus ride from The Queens Wharf Event Centre

Queens Wharf Event Centre (TSB arena)

This is the main event headquarters for Unicon, and is where the Freestyle, Hockey and Basketball will be held, as well as various workshops.  It has three large courts.  The event centre plays host to many international sporting tournaments, and  its location on the waterfront means that we get to interact with the public and introduce them to unicycling.  It is also walking distance from the centre of town.

Wellington Waterfront

This will be the site of the opening parade as well as the 10km criterium road race.   Th opening parade will start under the Sails at TSB arena, going along the waterfront, over the City to Sea Bridge and finishing in Civic Square. Civic Square is the main town centre and you will be welcomed with a Powhiri (traditional Maori Welcome).  The Trials competition will be in a flat area along the waterfront.

Mount Victoria

This is the part of the ‘town-belt’ surrounds the City.  It has spectacular views as it rises 200m above the city, and is only a 10min walk from Wellingtons main restaurant/bar precinct of Courteney Place.  It has plenty of singletrack and climbing.  In 1997, a round of the Mountainbike World Cup was held on Mount Victoria.  It was won by an up-and-coming rider by the name of Cadel Evans, who has since gone on to challenge for the Tour de France.

Newtown Athletics Park

This is located in an adjoining suburb of Newtown.  It is a 400m athletics track, next to Wellington Zoo.  There are various buses that will take you there in about 10min from town.

Waitangi Park

This is a large skatepark about 10min along the waterfront from The Events centre.  It is a popular park with several skatebowls, ramps, rails and stairs.  The Flatland competition will likely be held adjacent to Waitangi Park.

Shelly Bay

The Marathon 42km road race will be held around Miramar Peninsular, starting and finishing at Shelly Bay, which follows the coast from the city heading towards the airport.
