Countdown to UNICON XV

Just over one more week to UNICON XV!

IUF Rulebook 2010
UNICON XV will follow IUF Rulebook 2010. It will be up soon on the Unicon XV website. You may also browse the Rulebook at the Information Office at TSB Arena when UNICON starts.

UNICON XV Schedule
We have published the final programme of all events and workshops on the UNICON website.

Please check the events notice board daily for new workshops, or last minute changes to programme due to bad weather.

If you still like to host an impromptu workshop, let us know too so we can announce on the events notice board.

Downhill Gliding
Downhill Gliding will be held on 30 December from 12.30 to 17:00 at Newtown Park.

Open Stage Night Saturday 2nd January 9:30pm
Hosted by the inimitable Vinyl Burns, this is a night where you, the participants of UNICON XV are the stars of the show. All and every kind of act is invited to perform on stage, in the style of Renegade Shows at juggling festivals, in front of a friendly audience. Any kind of skill, unicycling or otherwise, is permitted and encouraged.  Got a cool new trick that you’ve been working on, or something that is just plain goofy? We want to see it! It could be a song, a joke, some weird party trick you can do or even a rehearsed stage act. So think about what you might like to do on stage and see you there for a great night’s entertainment!

Merry Christmas and see you soon. And don’t forget to wear your team t-shirts for the Opening Ceremony.

Are you ready for Unicon?

Unicon is just round the corner now. Are you ready for your trip to the first Unicon in the Southern Hemisphere?

Online Registration Closed

Online registration is now closed. You can still register at the door for NZ$500 (NZ$150 for non-competitor). If you have pre-registered, you can only add these events –10km, Muni, Marathon, Trials, Downhill Gliding, Coasting – by paying the full registration fee. So hope you have already signed up for the correct events.

We have 649 registered unicyclists from 23 countries. ONLY registered unicyclists (competitors and non-competitors) are allowed to unicycle at all official Unicon venues. Non-registered riders CANNOT take part in any of the Unicon workshops and non-competition rides.

Gym Rules

Artistic freestyle, standard skills, hockey and basketball will be held in the gym. Make sure you have non-marking tyre, plastic or rubber pedals and no sharp or protruding parts on your unicycle if you are using the gym.

Workshops

The list of workshop is now up on the website.

Among them will be a Muni night ride. So bring lights if you’re keen to join.

We are still open for more volunteers to conduct a workshop, organise a game or lead a ride. Please email us by 14 Dec (Monday) at unicon15@gmail.com if you’re interested.

Judging and Refereeing Workshops

For those who have to attend the compulsory judging or refereeing workshops, please take note of the following schedule:

  • Freestyle Judging (individual, pair, group): 28 Dec, 4-5pm
  • Hockey Refereeing: 29 Dec, 6-7pm
  • Standard Skill Judging: 1 Jan (Fri), 12-1pm
  • Basketball Refereeing: 2 Jan (Sat), 1-2.30pm
  • Street Freestyle Judging: 2 Jan (Sat), 4-5pm
  • Flatland Judging: 4 Jan (Mon), 9-10am

Transport to events

Most events are held along Wellington’s waterfront, a short stroll from your city accommodation.

A few events are held outside the city centre. They are Track & Field, Downhill Gliding, Muni and Marathon. You will find instructions on how to get to these venues in the programme booklet and at the Unicon notice board when you arrive.

There will be a chartered bus to bring competitors and spectators to the starting point of Marathon at Shelly Bay on 7 January. It costs $5 per person for the return trip. Buy your ticket at registration.

Kiwi Summer

New Zealand’s weather changes very fast. It can become very cold (typical highs are 15C to 20C though it can go to a occasional high of 25C) even in summer. We also get lots of wind and rain in Wellington, so remember to bring warm clothes and a rain jacket for your trip. Don’t forget sunscreen too as UV exposure is very high in New Zealand.

Border Control

Please make sure you have clean tyres, shoes and shin protection. New Zealand has strict border controls and may fine as much as NZ$200 if you have dirty equipment. Declare all your equipment at the immigration. Jugglers, if you are bringing juggling balls, make sure they do not have seeds.

Pre-order Unicon Hoodies

We are having a limited edition gorgeous granite grey Unicon hoodie for sale by pre-order. Cost is NZ$40. You do not need to pay now but we need numbers and sizes by 14 Dec (Monday). Email us at <unicon15@gmail.com>. Hoodies must be paid and picked up by 31 Dec.

See you really soon. And don’t forget to wear your team t-shirt at the opening ceremony. You may like to bring extra t-shirts to trade with other countries.

Workshops now open

One of the main reasons to attend Unicon is to share your skills and to meet other unicyclists.

Workshops can be run by anyone attending Unicon, and will be fitted around the competition schedule.  It can be unicycling related, or nothing to do with unicycling at all.  It’s for you to share something with other unicyclists as part of the ‘CON’vention side of UniCON.

Once you’ve had a look at the competition schedule, fill in the form on the Workshops Page and email back to us.  We will slot your workshop into the Unicon Schedule.

Also, as a way to promote Unicycling in New Zealand, we are running a couple of Public workshops.   We need volunteers to teach the public how to ride a unicycle. If you are keen, please let us know: unicon15@gmail.com

Unicon XV update: 6 months away!

Registration update

We have 404 registered participants from 19 different countries. Our biggest teams are from Denmark and Germany with 82 registrations each, and New Zealand with 46 registrations.  For the first time, we also have unicyclists from as far away as Liechtenstein and Senegal.  There are 185 Male competitors, and 121 Female competitors, and 98 registered as non-competitors.

Registration cut-offs
The next registration payment cut-off is 31 August 2009. The registration price is currently $250, but increases to $350 on 1 Sept 2009.  Pay for your registrations early to get the lower entry price.  You can register and edit your entry throughout the year (whether or not you have paid). So if you decide on changing the events you’re entered in, you will be able to do so right up until Dec 2009.

Opening Ceremony

This promises to be a spectacular event, with riders doing a parade along the waterfront alongside breathtaking views across Wellington Harbour, then climbing over the City to Sea Bridge to finish at Civic Square. You will be greeted with a Powhiri (traditional Maori welcome), followed by opening ceremony formalities as you arrive at the town square.

New Years Eve Celebrations
This is the first ever UNICON run over the New Year.  Party away the last few hours of 2009 with hundreds of unicyclists from around the world, alongside thousands of Wellingtonians, in the worlds Southermost Capital City. It will be something to remember for the rest of your life.

Breaking News!
We’re not just going to the party, we’re part of it!  Unicon XV have been included in the Wellington Citys’ New Years Eve celebration.  Be part of the final countdown to 2010, with live bands, street entertainment, and of course, our very own unicycle performances.  If you or your team would like to be part of the New Years Eve entertainment, please get in touch with us on unicon15@gmail.com
Show the people of New Zealand what Unicycling is all about!

UNICON 14 wristbands
Many of you have religiously kept these from Denmark. As part of the workshops programme, there will be a special taking off ceremony and ritual burning of wristbands. If you still have yours on, look after it until UNICON XV.

Unicon Workshops
Many of you are aware that UNICON is more than a World Championships for Unicycling. It is the World CONvention.  The convention consists of meeting unicyclists from around the world, informal rides, day trips and workshops.  A workshop can consist of almost anything….it doesn’t necessarily have to be unicycling related. For instance, previous Unicons have held workshops ranging from ‘Disc Golf’, to Wheelbuilding, to ‘Unitouring photos’, to an ‘Old Geezers Meeting’.  I think you have to be over a certain age to find out what that’s about!  If you would like to host a workshop, think about what you need (eg room size, overhead projectors, and other props) and the most suitable date for your workshop.  We will open up this up later this week.

Public Workshops
As part of the Wellington ‘Summer City’ entertainment programme and sponsorship from the Wellington City Council, we have agreed to give free public workshops teaching people how to ride a unicycle.  It will be heavily promoted in the lead-up to Unicon as part of the publicity around our event.  Help us grow the sport of Unicycling by teaching the locals how to ride on one wheel!  More details will be available when we open up the UNICON Workshops programme

Look forward to seeing you down under!
