UNICON is over!

Many thanks to our local organising committee, our army of volunteers, competitors, non-competitors and their support crew, our wonderful sponsors and the people of Wellington for playing host to such an amazing event. For ten days Wellington was truly unique as it was invaded by hundreds of unicyclists from all over the world. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did, and remember it for a long time to come.

Here are some parting shots from the Wharf Jumping workshop!

Unicycle Hockey Final Today

The final game of the unicycle hockey tournament at Unicon XV will take place on Tuesday 5 January at 1pm at TSB Arena, Wellington.

The final teams are: Swiss Team and Deserteure, representing Switzerland and Germany respectively.

Swiss Team earned their place in the final by coming top of their group in the round-robin stage (Group Stage), and then beating Team Great Britain in their quarter-final, and contenders RSD United, from Germany, in the semi-final.

Deserteure also topped their group, and preceded to the final via comfortable quarter- and semi-final wins over surprise Group Stage qualifiers Frederiksberg Unicykel Klub of Denmark and Blau Weiss Bavaria of Germany.

Swiss Team took third place at the previous Unicon, two years ago at Frederiksberg in Denmark, and was world champion on the previous two occasions.  Deserteure have achieved second- and third-placed finishes over the last three championships.

Top scorer for Deserteure, Sonja Theiss, had to leave the rink in the semi-final, after suffering a bloodied face in a collision with an opposition player but she is expected to be fit for the final.

Twenty-three teams competed in the tournament, from New Zealand, Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, France, Denmark, Korea, Singapore and Hong Kong.

Germany had the strongest contingent, with seven teams, drawn mostly from the formidable German Unicycle Hockey League, where more than 50 teams compete weekly in this little-known sport.

Christoph Verholt, Gaby Scherer, Holger Summer (capt), Maximiliane Jaik, Rolf Sander, Sonja Theiß, Linda Theiß,

Unicyclists countdown to New Year!!!

It’s the last day of the year, and the last day of the decade. Hundreds of unicyclists spent the day enjoying it in Wellington with members of the public.  UNICON XV ran a public ‘learn-to-ride” workshop, which had dozens of people turning up to Frank Kitts park to try out unicycling!  Many were able to get on, and even go a few metres, after expert instruction from the worlds best unicyclists.

We had a live Unicycle Demo for the public at Civic Square, with The Berkeley Uni-basketball team showing off their best moves, our Street Champions doing various jumps over each other, and The Japanese Freestyle Team providing a crowd pleasing performance.

For the first time in Unicon history, hundreds of unicyclists from around the world gathered to count down the New Year in style!

Registration packs are ready!

Big thanks to all the volunteers who turned up at Lynne and Arthurs place yesterday to put together 750 registration packs….all stuffed full of goodies including chocolate, muesli bars, drinks, t-shirts and more!  It took four hours and almost 20 volunteers to put this all together.

We also strung up the greenstone medals- they look fantastic.

See you at Unicon next week!
